What is AlertU?

AlertU is an emergency short messaging service or SMS (text) messaging technology developed for college and university communities and enterprises. Designated account managers send text messages to subscribers mobile devices communicating critical campus updates to students, staff and faculty in real-time. Friends and family members are also able to subscribe to receive updates.

How is AlertU utilized?

AlertU is only used in emergency situations to communicate critical information to employees, students, faculty and staff during an emergency. AlertU is not to be used for non-emergency information or general updates as actual emergency messaging can lose effectiveness.

What is Two-way Messaging?

Two-way Messaging allows subscribers to reply to received emergency alerts in real-time. Subscribers can relay emergency information to AlertU account manager or administrator from inside a crisis zone.

How do users subscribe?

Users subscribe to receive alerts by texting the designated keyword to AlertU (253788) or signing up through widgets posted on the school or enterprise website or online at www.alertu.org.

How do users unsubscribe?

To unsubscribe, text STOP or UNSUB to 253788 (AlertU). This will unsubscribe you from *all* alerts you are signed up for. For more instructions, you can go to our Unsubscribe page.

Will subscribers receive SPAM messages from AlertU?

No SPAM! Subscriber information is only accessible to campus administrators and not shared with any Waterfall Mobile business partner or third party marketers. AlertU strictly follows the Mobile Marketing Association guidelines safeguarding subscribers from SPAM.

How is the AlertU program managed?

AlertU supports current emergency action plans as an additional emergency communication layer to students, staff and faculty. Once a situation is declared an emergency, the designated AlertU account manager or administrator sends an alert to subscribers.

Can AlertU be accessed away from an office computer?

Yes. AlertU is web-based and accounts can be accessed from any web-enabled device to send emergency alerts.

Why is it necessary to opt-in?

Telemarketing and anti-SPAM regulations clearly warn against sending unsolicited text SPAM messages. Subscribers simply have to opt-in, authorizing permission to receive text alerts to their phones.

What is Send-from-Phone and how does it work?

In the event you can not access the internet, AlertU provides designated account managers and administrators the ability to send alerts from their phone via SMS. This is useful in power outages or if internet access has been compromised.

Is it possible to upload a database of student phone numbers?

Yes. However, bulk upload is not foolproof. In addition to opt-in telemarketing and anti-SPAM regulations, database lists often have expired mobile numbers, users with false information or phones that simply may not be able to receive text messages. Our AlertU team will assist you to determine if bulk upload is the right option with your list(s).

Are costs associated with AlertU?

AlertU offers various levels of service to meet the needs of your school, organization or company. Contact AlertU Sales for the most current pricing offerings. Note: Message and Data Rates May Apply for individual subscribers.

What carriers are supported?

AlertU is supported by all major carriers: Alltel, AT&T, Boost Mobile, Cellular One, Cincinnati Bell, Nextel, Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular, Verizon and Virgin Mobile.

Why are smaller carriers not supported?

Small regional carriers, pre-paid phones and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) often do not support short code access. If your carrier is not currently supported, please e-mail us at support@alertu.org as new carrier support is constantly being added to the AlertU platform.
